Louisburgh is situated as the mouth of the Bunowen River and leads to some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. There are a number of blue flag beaches within the Louisburgh area. The beach at Old Head is just a stones throw away from the self catering accommodation and lies at the base of a prominent headland flanked by the oldest natural Oak Wood in Ireland on the western edge with views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick (Ireland’s Holy Pilgrimage Mountain) the unspoiled beauty is clear to see all around you, a truly unforgettable experience.


















The sweeping golden sandy beaches are a thrill for any adult or child alike. Whether sunbathing or a stroll along the beach with a myriad of rock pools teeming with life, forming the most natural of aquariums. Why not visit the Crafts centre in Louisburgh and discover the story of Granuaile, Grace O’Malley, The Pirate Queen, reliving the fascinating story of the ruthlessly famous 16th Century Pirate Queen of Clew Bay, through a multimedia tour before taking a short ferry crossing from local Roonagh Pier to Clare Island where the ruins of her castle still stand.


Old Head is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding areas such as Leenaun with Connemara’s wild, rugged and beautifully formed landscapes as well as Ireland’s only fjord at Killary, a tranquil setting to discover the best and some of the most beautiful Irish surroundings. Westprot and Achill Island, all of which are breathtaking panoramic scenic drives. Galway city is an hour and thirty minutes drive or North takes you to Sligo if you want to explore further afield. Old Head is an ideal base to set off on your travels and still arrive back in plenty of time to enjoy the evenings or simply stay put and relax and enjoy one of the most picturesque and fun parts of Ireland.
